om 2008.09 reconfiguration
last night an update/upgrade hosed my 2008.08-update installation on my neo freerunner. i was able to determine that the angstrom feed in my package feed list was the cause for breaking the system, so i’ve removed that particular feed for the time being.
since there was an official 2008.09 release, i decided to do a full re-flash to the updated kernel and root filesystem into little neo. this meant i lost all my application installations and package management settings, but my dialer contact database was still intact! i had fortunately decided to format and used my sdhc card to store the user home directory using a symbolic link.
the main changes i had to repeat after flashing the nand kernel and rootfs were:
- updated the keyboard to return to the previous qwerty format that included a nice “terminal” section of keys, and the ability to force the keyboard to appear (i needed this for a terminal app)
- install the mofi wifi setup application (and resolve a crash defect)
- update the alsamixer sound levels to something sane
- opkg install gpsd, set up the device link correctly, and the om-maps-new-york package
- update /etc/localtime to point to New_York
- made sure gps worked
officially i’m waiting for the fso distribution to have pim and syncing capabilities before moving over…
openmoko and the union of emptiness and skillful means
yesterday i was finally able to pick up my neo freerunner. when i opened the packaging, out fell an insert, quoting
Thirty spokes share the wheel’s hub
It is the center hole that makes it useful
Shape clay into a vessel
It is the space within that makes it useful
Cut doors and windows for a room
It is the holes which make it useful
Therefore benefit comes from what is there
Usefulness from what is not there.
